Vestavia Voice

In the past 35 years, nearly 20,000 children have lost a parent in active duty service.

Xavier and Aleah Taylor are two of them.

“Their father was killed in action just before his 26th birthday,” said Jerome Vason, a local artist who served almost 20 years in the military.

It’s stories like the Taylors’ that tugged at the heartstrings of Vason and other members of Artists Incorporated Gallery in Vestavia Hills.

Children of Fallen Patriots Included Among 6 Best Scholarships For Survivors

Jun 20, 2016

Task and Purpose

There are a number of scholarships that cater specifically to children in Gold Star families.

Paying for college isn’t easy. Having to worry about how to afford to tuition when you’ve lost a parent to combat isn’t something anyone should have to do. That’s why a number of foundations have made it their mission to honor the fallen by helping their children pay for their education.

In order to determine the best scholarships for survivors, we reached out to the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, a gold-star family advocacy group, which has program coordinators that work to prevent and eliminate college debt for children whose parents were lost to military service.

“There are some organizations that just provide money to surviving families, [but] these organizations go way above and beyond to make sure the families are supported as well as funded,” according to Ashlynne Haycock, an education support services coordinator with TAPS. “These organizations help make the dreams of a college education a reality.”

Exceptional Parent: Promoting Healthy Futures One Child at a Time

http://www.eparent.com/military-uncategorized/children-of-fallen-patriots-foundation-continues-to-expand-in-the-new-year/

The beginning of a new year provides an opportunity for Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation to reflect on the success of the past year and the growth of the year to come. As the foundation rapidly expands, Fallen Patriots is excited to announce they are relocating their headquarters to Reston, Virginia, located 20 minutes west of Washington, DC. The new location will provide more strategic opportunities to better locate and serve the 20,000 Gold Star children who have lost a parent in the line of duty. Fallen Patriots will maintain a presence in Jacksonville, Florida, but will officially move into their new headquarters March 1, 2016.

The success of Fallen Patriots can be told by countless Gold Star students, but the need for financial support continues to grow. Many surviving families struggle to make ends meet with sixty percent of surviving spouses making less than $50,000 per year. Fallen Patriots works to find each and every one of these surviving families with the intent to give them the future they deserve. With each scholar, Fallen Patriots strives to provide the education their fallen patriot would have wanted for them.

Greenwich Pastor Races to Benefit Families of Fallen Troops

May 26, 2016

Greenwich Time

GREENWICH — Lance Svendsen laced up for his first marathon in 2012. He has been running — and fundraising — ever since.

Svendsen, 31, the youth pastor at Stanwich Congregational Church, never got to run the New York City marathon that year because it was canceled after Superstorm Sandy struck.

But in less than 36 hours, he organized a “Run Anyway” marathon-length race in Central Park, which attracted some 3,000 runners and raised about $16,000 for Staten Island, N.Y., survivors of the disaster.

The success of that event led to Run Anyway, a nonprofit founded by Svendsen to raise money for several causes, including suicide prevention.

In 2014, he launched Run Anyway’s signature — and largest — event, 500 for the Fallen, a 500-mile relay race between Concord, Mass., and Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
